UBC Kinesiology Mentorship Program Kick-Off Event

Let’s be honest. The majority of event photos that we see online are very boring. As an event photographer, I feel like my duty is to deliver photos that not anyone with a camera, or even worse with a cellphone, can capture.

In order to deliver on that promise, I need to incorporate things such as lighting and motion to my pictures because those are some of the things that one can only master with years of experience. Don’t get me wrong. I am not suggesting that I am a master of lighting at all. In fact, I am learning new things about lighting on a daily basis, but the key point is to stay curious and learn as you go.

For this specific event, I had the honour of working with UBC School of Kinesiology again. I was there, in a dimly lit room, to document the 10th anniversary of their mentorship program which is an initiative that connect senior student with mentors who are already successful in their careers. As I had previously shot an event at Liu Institute for Global Issues I knew that I need to bring my handy speedlights to this shoot.

I used two lights; one light was place behind my subjects to separate them from the background, and the other light was on my camera with the purpose of lighting their faces.

I am currently using Cactus flashes and triggers and the reason behind it is that they are much more versatile than other options on the market as I can use them with virtually any digital camera. The trigger also allows me to change my flash settings without needing to touch the flash unit at all.

Imagine UBC Day 2018

KIN Spirit : UBC School of Kinesiology

A few months ago, I was asked by UBC School of Kinesiology to follow their freshman students on Imagine Day 2018 for half a day to capture what they called the KIN spirit. At first, I thought they are just bragging and there is no way that they are any different than other faculties, but I couldn’t have been more wrong!

I was at the UBC Memorial Gym ready to shoot at around 7:30 am. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting to see so many students ready to hit the road so early in the morning. They all were full of energy and excitement to start this new chapter in their lives. As someone who is in his last year of studies, I kind of sad that I will be done with school pretty soon.

Here is what I captured on Imagine UBC Day 2018 for School of Kinesiology:

Thank you School of Kinesiology for having me! :)
